Grammy Award winner to perform at Hawaii Calls Florida Festival

LAKE WORTH, FL. OCT 15 - Grammy Award winner and Hawaiian slack key recording artist George Kahumoku will travel from Hawaii to perform at the 2007 Hawaii Calls Florida Festival being held Saturday, October 27 from 10am-10pm at the Bryant Park Bandstand in Lake Worth.

Kahumoku who received the Grammy for best Hawaiian music album at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles was one of four producers awarded for the multi-artist instrumental and vocal compilation, 'Legends of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar - Live from Maui.'

"We're so very pleased that George who has performed for dignitaries like Her Majesty The Queen of England and the Premier of China, will be here to help us make the Hawaii Calls Florida Festival the biggest ever local celebration of Hawaiian music, food and Culture," said Charles Kaleialoha Smith, better known as 'Uncle Charlie,' the co-founder of the non-profit Hawaii Calls Florida.

Kahumoku will celebrate the Hawaiian language and melodies alongside local Hawaiian musicians performing authentic music from the island's traditional songbook. Admission to the event is free of charge and organizers are anticipating hundreds of families and friends of South Florida's growing Hawaiian community to attend. Other highlights include dance performances in full Hawaiian regalia, mouth watering island dishes, and hula lessons for children and adults.

This year the Office of Hawaiian Affairs "kau inoa" program endowed Hawaii Calls Florida with a cultural grant to help promote Hawaiian culture. The annual festival seeks to preserve and perpetuate Hawaii's renowned Aloha Spirit - the intangible quality that sets the islands apart, among the growing number of expatriate Hawaiians now living in south Florida. It's the brainchild of Hawaii-born South Florida resident Charles Kaleialoha Smith, who co-founded the non-profit Hawaii Calls Florida with a mission to create a vibrant network of organizations and individuals with ties to Hawaii who help share the island's rich heritage and culture with all people.
