A senior amateur and semi-professional league player in England and Germany until his career was halted by injury, Stevens has coached youth soccer for over twenty-seven years.

In Britain, he was appointed Head Coach to Mancunian Boys, nursery team of
England's famed Manchester United in 1978 and was named Head Coach at the University of Manchester in 1981. Stevens holds several soccer coaching licenses from both British and American soccer associations, including the English Football Association, the U.S. Soccer Federation and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
